Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes story from the making of the cult musical drama Rockstar, revealing that legendary composer A.R. Rahman once suggested that Ranbir Kapoor should sing all the songs in the film himself. The filmmaker disclosed the anecdote through a recent audio note shared on social media while promoting his upcoming project, Main Vaapas Aaunga.
According to Imtiaz, Rahman was curious about Ranbir Kapoor’s singing abilities during the film’s production. The composer believed it would be a unique and authentic creative choice if the actor could lend his own voice to the soundtrack. However, Imtiaz admitted he was immediately hesitant about the idea and urged Rahman not to pursue it further.
The director later informed Ranbir about Rahman’s proposal, which reportedly left the actor even more nervous. Imtiaz recalled that Ranbir strongly opposed the idea, saying he never wanted to sing in front of the Oscar-winning composer.
Released in 2011, Rockstar remains one of the most celebrated collaborations between Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor, and A.R. Rahman. The film’s soundtrack, featuring timeless hits like Sadda Haq, Nadaan Parindey, and Tum Ho, continues to resonate with audiences.
Imtiaz also recently reflected on the making of Sadda Haq, revealing that he secretly instructed Ranbir to unexpectedly scream during a performance sequence. The spontaneous moment, captured without the crew’s prior knowledge, added raw intensity to the scene and became one of the film’s memorable highlights.
Meanwhile, Imtiaz Ali is gearing up for the release of Main Vaapas Aaunga, while Ranbir Kapoor is preparing to portray Lord Ram in the highly anticipated epic Ramayana.
