Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and music maestro A.R. Rahman have reunited for an ambitious new project, Masoom: The New Generation, a contemporary reimagining inspired by Kapur’s acclaimed 1983 classic Masoom. The film will see Rahman taking on a dual role as both composer and co-producer, marking another significant collaboration between the two celebrated artists.
Kapur and Rahman have previously worked together on notable international and theatrical projects, including Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Bombay Dreams, and Why? The Musical. Their latest venture aims to revisit the emotional themes that made the original Masoom a landmark in Indian cinema while presenting them through a modern lens.
Speaking about the project, Kapur said the story’s themes of family, identity, and relationships remain relevant today but deserve to be explored within contemporary social realities. He added that Rahman’s ability to connect music with the emotional core of a story makes him an invaluable creative partner for the film.
Rahman expressed enthusiasm about expanding his involvement beyond music. The Oscar-winning composer described Kapur as a long-time mentor and said the filmmaker’s vision for the project inspired him to contribute as a producer as well. According to Rahman, revisiting the emotional world of Masoom for a new generation is both exciting and meaningful.
The film boasts a star-studded ensemble cast featuring Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kaveri Kapur. Currently in the pre-production stage, Masoom: The New Generation is expected to begin filming later this year, with a worldwide theatrical release planned for 2026.
