Brown Survived Delays By Focusing On Motive Over Mystery Twist

The psychological crime thriller Brown, starring Karisma Kapoor as detective Rita Brown, underwent a remarkable transformation before finally reaching audiences after years of delays. According to writer Mayukh Ghosh, the series was initially conceived as a traditional whodunit based on the novel City of Death. However, as development progressed, the creative team realised modern viewers expected more than a simple mystery centered on identifying the killer.

Ghosh explained that the writers shifted their focus from “who committed the crime” to “why the crime was committed.” Working alongside Diggi Sisodia and Sunayana Kumari, he reimagined the narrative to explore the motives and belief systems driving the murders. This approach became the foundation of the series and added greater psychological depth to the story.

Addressing criticism that some viewers may guess the killer before the final reveal, Ghosh said the identity of the murderer was never intended to be the central mystery. Instead, the show follows Rita Brown’s personal journey as she investigates the crimes while confronting her own emotional struggles and inner conflicts.

The road to release was far from smooth. Written during the pandemic, Brown spent several years in production limbo despite being showcased at the Berlin Market Selects in 2023. To ensure the series felt fresh upon release, the makers revisited the editing process and restructured it from eight 30-minute episodes into seven episodes of approximately 40 minutes each.

Looking back, Ghosh believes the decision to emphasize motive over identity helped the series remain relevant despite the long delay. For him, the true mystery of Brown lies not in discovering the killer, but in understanding the reason behind the crimes.
