As it marks 25 years since its original release, the iconic Bollywood film Lagaan is set to return to cinemas for a special theatrical re-release on June 12, 13, and 14. The announcement was made by Aamir Khan’s production house, accompanied by a nostalgic trailer showcasing some of the film’s most memorable moments.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan remains one of the most celebrated films in Indian cinema. Set in 1893 during British colonial rule, the story follows the residents of the fictional village of Champaner, who are struggling under the burden of heavy taxes amid a severe drought. Their lives take an unexpected turn when a British officer challenges them to a cricket match, offering tax exemption if they emerge victorious.
The film starred Aamir Khan alongside Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, and a talented ensemble cast. Its powerful blend of sports, drama, history, and emotion won widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
Adding to its enduring appeal is the unforgettable soundtrack composed by A. R. Rahman, featuring beloved songs such as “Mitwa,” “Ghanan Ghanan,” and “O Rey Chhori.”
